No. 280 - Passion Flowers

As low as $8.00

The citizens of France, source country of the mysterious Passion Flower, are known to be a passionate bunch. From their poetry, to their zest for life and love of fine wines and food, the French practically wrote the book on passionate living.

Now, all that said, the Passion Flower isn’t named for the passionate people of France – that part is coincidence. Rather, and here is where it gets mysterious, Passion Flowers were named by the Spanish, way back in 1569 when they first stepped foot on the soil of what would come to be known as Peru. Seeking divine confirmation that their quest to conquer the new world was the right and just, the Spanish saw the passion flower as a symbol of Christ’s passion, and as confirmation of his approval of their exploration of South America. Strange, but true.

Nowadays, Passion Flowers are grown around the world but in our view, the finest specimens are grown in France. Herbalists and practitioners of traditional medicine in the country believe that a tisane made from the flower has sleep inducing qualities, making it an excellent before-bed beverage for insomniacs, or for people whose passion for life has led them to party on till the wee hours. A votre santé!
